One of my habits as a lens master is to check in with my “Favorites” tab to see what people have been up to. It’s usually what I do between lenses, when I can’t decide what to do next. There’s usually an interesting Squidcast or two to check out.
Recently, I found that nearly every item on my Favorites page was from the same lensmaster. I won’t name any names, but this person constantly sent updates about the same lenses and groups, without any indication that there was new content to be seen. They usually seemed like generic advertisements.
I’m not one to judge what a person uses the Squidcast for - to each their own. What bothered me about it is that there were so many, all of the other people I am following were getting bumped before I could get a chance to see their Casts. There are so many things that I could be doing while I have a chance to sit down at my keyboard. Flipping back through pages and pages of Squidcasts is not one of them.
After a few weeks, I finally got up the nerve to head on over to the lensmaster’s profile and leave the fan club. I’ve never unfavorited anything before, and I didn’t exactly enjoy doing it, but enough was enough. I wonder if I should send along some advice on how not to annoy your fan club?

I have to say I've seen this done a few times as well. I chalk it up to them not knowing any better-being a newbie and hope that after a couple of days they will grow out of it.
ReplyDeleteUsually after a week of it, they get bored and I don't see any more casts sent from them (I assume they got bored with Squidoo altogether, because often they never add any new lenses either).
If it's apparent that they are just some MLM spammer, I report them, but this is rare, cause usually I see it happening with new members who just don't know any better yet.
I know for myself, when the Squid cast first came out, I sent one out for each update, not realizing how many of the same updates I was sending to every one, but back than Casts were still new so I didn't know what they were; than I figured out how they were supposed to be being used, and after that I only sent one after doing some sort of a major update and I would detail which modules were new/changed, so my fans could scroll down to the new stuff directly.
You know, you should expand on your post here and start a lens titled: How not to annoy your fan club.

I found the same thing from one person in particular. In the end I did the same as you, left her fan club. I felt bad doing it but I got so fed up with all the squidcasts arriving in a big bunch.
ReplyDeleteNow I see it on Twitter and unfollow anybody who does it immediately. I don't agonise about it at all now.
I simply ignore them! See it and don't care! ;)
ReplyDeleteYou can simply leave their fanclub right from your 'favorites' tab in your dashboard. No need to go to their profile.
ReplyDeleteYou should not agonize about it - anybody who does this for longer periods of time is ignoring the very basics of social networking: think about your audience.
